Membership of the scheme is voluntary. When you start working for the NHS you automatically become a member, but you can opt out if you wish, and you can leave the scheme at any time.
The main benefits of the scheme are:
•    a pension and tax free lump sum when you retire
•    life assurance cover
•    ill health retirement benefits
•    redundancy benefits.

Pensions are based on salary and length of membership of the scheme.

Details of the benefits of the NHS Pension Scheme can be found in the booklet 'A Guide to the NHS Pension Scheme' which you should have received with your appointment letter. If you did not receive this booklet or need further information about the pension scheme, the Pensions Department can be contacted on 01872 358623.
