Carbon Reduction

The Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Healthcare community are committed to reducing their carbon footprint.

Over the past few years, Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Healthcare community have embarked on ambitious utilities based carbon reduction programmes which has included:
•    refurbishment of existing buildings and      construction of new builds to high standards
•    installation of solar thermal and photovoltaic      renewable energy systems, and rainwater      harvesting systems
•    replacement of old and inefficient equipment
•    installation of a 750kW Biomass boiler      (currently the largest in a hospital setting in the      country)
•    installation of more than 2,000 low energy      LED lights in high occupancy areas
•    decentralisation of water distribution systems      and use of “point of use” water heaters

Such projects, and the commitment and good work of Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Healthcare community staff, has resulted in a reduction in the utilities based carbon footprint by approximately 8% since 2006/07 for sites managed by Cornwall Healthcare Estates Support Services

Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Healthcare community also undertake Carbon Awareness raising activity, including:
•    an annual Carbon Awareness Week
•    support for a network of Environmental Champions
•    initiaitves to promote healthy lifestyles and wellbeing
•    carbon Wise website (containing helpful tips and      resources)
•    working with other organisations in Cornwall to share      resources and promote carbon reduction and      sustainability.

A selection of recent activity in the travel, porcurement and waste areas are as follows:
•    Renal Unit at Treliske Hospital reduced CO2      emissions by 66,000 kg between 2008 and 2010
•    A significant reduction in travel and procurement      related emissions has been achieved
•    Increased the amount of locally sourced food, and      developed a Cornwall Food Production Unit in      partnership with Community 1st Cornwall
•    Established car-sharing partnerships
•    Infrastructure and resources implemented for cyclists
•    Car ‘Park and Ride’ scheme implemented at Treliske      Hospital
•    Regularly co-ordinate delivery of service routes to      ensure the least amount of miles are undertaken.
